Higher cabs bring bigger blind spots

New research offers greater visibility into heavy vehicle blind spots, suggesting the need for fresh standards. By Megan Lampinen

While road safety statistics in general are improving, there has been little progress when it comes to the interaction of heavy vehicles with vulnerable road users (VRUs), such as pedestrians and cyclists. Much of the problem stems from vehicle design and cab height, according to researchers at Loughborough University in the UK. A recent study by the Loughborough Design School concluded that cab height in particular had a big influence on the size of the blind spots in specific models.
