HDV electrification is conceivable – for limited applications

Development of electrification technology for HDV on-highway and refuse trucks application continues, even though batteries “need further development,” observes Michael Nash

Numerous experts in the automotive industry believe that electrification of the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) segment is but a distant dream; battery and electric motor technologies, they suggest, need significant advancement before they can be declared suitable and viable.

In a recent interview with Automotive World, Scania’s Chief Executive Henrik Henriksson said that electrification is only currently feasible in select applications, referring instead to renewable fuels like biodiesel as an area of particular promise. However, the company has recently played a key role in a project that has resulted in the opening of the world’s first ‘electric road’.
