Federal oversight – it is more than FCA under review

NHTSA wants FCA to keep up the monthly meetings and reports, but some industry watchers suggest more fundamental changes are needed. By Megan Lampinen

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be keeping a close watch on FCA US for a little bit longer. A year ago, the manufacturer agreed to "rigorous federal oversight" by NHTSA, as well as a US$105m civil penalty, as a consequence of violating certain Motor Vehicle Safety Act requirements. The safety agency had highlighted a poor execution in 23 separate vehicle safety recalls last year, during which FCA fell short in three key areas: effective and timely recall remedies, notification to vehicle owners and dealers and notifications to NHTSA.
