Driving vs monitoring: it’s more work to watch

Automated systems mean we are no longer accelerating and braking by rote but actively monitoring how the car accelerates and brakes. By Megan Lampinen

Automated driving systems are intended to reduce the burden on drivers, taking over some of the more onerous aspects of the daily commute or the long road trip. However, some significant unintended consequences have emerged. According to the behavioural psychologists, these driver assistance systems can make for more work, cognitively, than they save.
