Recent research has found that the human-machine interface (HMI) for many semi-autonomous systems fails to meet the needs of consumers. In April 2017, Strategy Analytics reported that semi-autonomous systems have failed to excel due to poor HMI design, which in some cases are so intuitive that users fail to determine whether automated functions are activated or deactivated. This has grave implications for driver safety and can affect trust for automated technology.
