Confusing automation taxonomy could stymie acceptance

The insurance industry is urging greater clarity in how manufacturers describe what their automated vehicles can do, writes Megan Lampinen

Clarity around autonomous capability and terminology will be critical not only for road safety but also for questions around liability and insurance. Insurers in the UK have started by asking exactly what characterises an 'automated' label for vehicles. "Regulators and insurers require this to classify and insure vehicles appropriately, while consumers need to understand the functionality and capability of the vehicle and their own responsibilities," explained Matthew Avery, Director of Research at Thatcham Research.
