Controversy has arisen in North America between truck manufacturers and many of their customers over the subject of engine oil specifications. An investigation monitored by American Trucking Associations showed that most truck and engine makers now factory fill their diesel-engined chassis with low-viscosity 10W-30 grade lubricant. But many fleets and owner-operators subsequently elect to specify higher-viscosity 20W-40 engine oil at sump drain-and-refill intervals and when topping-up.
