Barcelona has been recognised as one of the leading smart cities in the world for a number of years, and in 2015 was ranked as number one globally ahead of New York, London, Nice and Singapore. The ranking – compiled by UK-based Juniper Research – placed a particular focus on the use of smart grids, traffic management and street lighting, as well as technological capabilities. Barcelona, it found, performed “consistently well” across all metrics. In 2016, Barcelona took second place behind Singapore.
