An inside look at smart city data management

The vast amounts of data that underpin smart cities require innovative management solutions, writes Megan Lampinen

Smart cities promise a safe, seamless and connected mobility ecosystem encompassing a variety of transport modes. Connectivity is at the heart of this new paradigm, and data is its lifeblood. Data must be conveyed to the artificial intelligence (AI) systems within self-driving vehicles as well as moved to and from edge data centres where analysis is performed, enabling vehicles to understand their surroundings and make real-time decisions. The amount of data consumed by connected and autonomous vehicles is vast, and it all must be managed and stored in the most effective manner. Exactly what that process looks like is under exploration at Ireland's upcoming test bed for future mobility.
