German trade union IG Metall expects to enter into a labour agreement with Opel by 26 October. Opel’s parent company General Motors is scheduled to report its result for the third quarter of 2012 on 31 October.

If Opel has not reached a new labour deal with IG Metall by 31 October, it will have to pay out a 4.3% industry-wide wage hike to its German workers, Reuters said. Open cannot defer the wage hike beyond this date.

The newswire said that the union has, for the first time, openly called for Opel’s management to drop compulsory layoffs through 2016, and beyond, as part of a possible deal.
