Replacing the human driver – the ‘ultimate safety goal’

One of the primary drivers for autonomous vehicle technology development is to reduce the chance of a collision. By Michael Nash

According to statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), 1,250,000 million people die each year as a result of road traffic collisions, and 95% of all crashes involve human error. As a result, OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and tech companies are looking at solutions that could replace the human driver, with the primary aim of lowering the chance of a collision from occurring in the first place.
