The US corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards were first enforced in 1975 in the hope of reducing the nation's energy consumption by increasing vehicle fuel efficiency. These standards have become increasingly stringent over time, forcing OEMs and suppliers to identify a wide variety of solutions.
