Long-awaited Tesla robotaxi service goes live in Austin

Tesla’s robotaxi trial feature eschews the safety driver, instead depending on teleoperators to resolve driving issues. By Stewart Burnett

Tesla launched its long-awaited robotaxi service in Austin on 22 June, encompassing roughly ten Model Y vehicles with Tesla employees seated as safety monitors in passenger seats. Chief Executive Elon Musk announced the service with a flat fee of US$4.20 for hand-selected riders in a limited geofenced area of the city.
