VW joins growing list of Algerian investors

The Volkswagen Group sees considerable potential in Algeria for its more affordable models. Local assembly could prove helpful in tapping demand and bypassing strict import restrictions. By Megan Lampinen

Algeria could play a role in Volkswagen's turnaround efforts, not only in putting the defeat device scandal squarely behind it but also towards achieving ambitious volume targets. The VW Group is teaming with local company Sovac, a long-time sales partner, to form an assembly joint venture. The jointly owned Sovac Production will assemble a range of models from Group brands at a newly constructed plant in Relizane, 220km west of Algiers.
