High strength plastics can provide a number of benefits when introduced into vehicle manufacturing. Replacing heavier materials such as steel with plastics in certain components and parts could result in notable improvements to fuel economy and emissions reductions. While the material itself is costly today, high strength plastics help lower vehicle production costs by alleviating the need for expensive tooling and forming techniques.
With these benefits in mind, several suppliers believe that plastics are viable for greater adoption in mass-market vehicles.
