US EPA verifies low rolling resistance tyres

US authorities have a long list of tyres that can help fleet operators reduce fuel costs, writes Michael Nash

Finding improvements in fuel economy is a big money game, particularly in the truck segment where fuel savings mean bigger profits for fleet operators. Many experts believe that the “low hanging fruit” has now been picked, with only costly solutions left to choose from, while fuel economy targets around the world become increasingly stringent.

As part of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Phase II proposal for MY2021 and beyond, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) made a database of technologies that could help OEMs meet the requirements. One of the avenues included was the use of low rolling resistance tyres.
