The market share of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) rose above 1% in seven countries during 2015, as global sales finally exceeded the one million mark. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), “EVs of all types lie at the heart of future sustainable transport systems” as the world aims to limit the average global temperature increase to 2 degrees – an agreement reached by politicians at the 2015 Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris.
China, the world’s largest vehicle market and also the biggest EV and PHEV market, will play an integral role. However, the Chinese government is concerned about the technical progress being made.
