Upsurge in demand for high-octane fuels

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects demand for high-octane fuels to grow in response to fuel economy standards. By Michael Nash

A report from the US EIA suggests that demand for high-octane gasoline has steadily increased since 2013, reaching its highest share of total gasoline sales in more than a decade. This is likely driven by changes to fuel requirements for light-duty vehicles (LDVs) in response to increasingly stringent fuel economy standards, as well as growing interest among industry stakeholders in the development of more efficient internal combustion engines (ICEs).
