Lighter equals better: the rise of driveline weight reduction

GKN believes driveline weight reduction is important in helping OEMs meet CO2 targets while improving vehicle performance, writes Michael Nash

Reducing vehicle weight has been a key trend in the automotive industry for many years. Using materials like advanced high strength steels (AHSS), aluminium and carbon fibre, companies have made considerable progress across the entire body, resulting in dramatic fuel economy and emissions improvements.

Lightweighting is also important when it comes to smaller components. Speaking to Automotive World, Ray Kuczera, Vice President of Global Product Technology, GKN Driveline, explained the factors that make driveline weight reduction a necessity.
