For May, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reported European sales of 71,800 vehicles. The Fiat 500 remained the most popular vehicle in the A segment, with nearly 16,000 units sold (+6.2% year-over-year), followed closely by the Fiat Panda. The Fiat 500L posted its 23rd consecutive month of sales increases and continued as leader in its segment with a 23.8% share. The Lancia Ypsilon recorded another strong monthly performance with European sales up 7% over the prior year. The Jeep® brand posted significant increases in all major European markets with overall sales double the prior year’s level. The brand also set a global monthly record with May sales passing the 100,000 vehicle mark.
The European passenger car market (EU28+EFTA) closed the month of May with new vehicle registrations up 4.3% year-over-year to nearly 1,134,000 units. For the five months year-to-date, registrations were up 6.6% to 5,619,000 units.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles posted European sales of 71,800 vehicles in May, representing a 2.9% decrease from the same month a year ago but a 3.3% increase over April 2014. Market share for the month was 6.3% (versus 6.8% a year ago).
FCA’s May sales were up 14.5% in Germany (versus +5.2% for the market) and 10.7% in the UK (+7.7% for the market). In Spain, where market demand was up 16.9% year-over- year, FCA posted a 55.5% sales increase.
For the five months year-to-date, Group sales totaled more than 345,000 vehicles (+1.4% year-over-year) and market share was 6.1% (versus 6.5%).
Fiat brand posted European sales of nearly 55,000 vehicles for the month, a 4.5% decrease over May 2013, with market share at 4.8% (versus 5.3%). The brand achieved year-over-year sales increases in Germany (+9.9%), the UK (+9.5%) and Spain (+69.1%). For the year to date, sales were up 1.1% to 267,000 vehicles, representing a 4.8% share of the market (5% in May 2013).
The 500 and Panda continued to lead the European A segment with a combined 31% share. For the Panda, which maintained its second place position, May sales topped the 14,000 mark with particularly strong performance in Italy, where share was up 140 basis points over the prior year to 42.6%.
For the 500 family, all models posted both volume and share increases over May 2013. Sales for the 500 totaled nearly 16,000 vehicles (+6.2% year-over-year) and segment share was 16.3%. For the year to date, sales of the 500 totaled nearly 79,000 units (+13.4% year- over-year) and share was 15.4%. For the 500L, May sales were up 34.9% to 9,600 vehicles, making it the 23rd consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases, and the model continued to lead its segment with a 23.8% share. Year to date, sales for the 500L were up 52.1% to more than 46,000 vehicles, representing a 22.9% segment share.
Lancia/Chrysler posted May sales of 7,500 vehicles (-2.3% year-over-year) and European market share was unchanged at 0.7%. The brand posted a particularly strong performance in France, with May sales up 137% and share increasing 40 basis points to 0.6%.
For the year to date, brand sales were down 1.9% to 34,000 vehicles and share was 0.6% (-10 bps).
For the Lancia Ypsilon, sales were up 7% in May and 10.8% for the year to date.
Alfa Romeo posted May sales of just under 5,600 vehicles (-19.2% year-over-year) and share was 0.5% (versus 0.6% a year ago). Performance was particularly positive in Germany (+20.3% year-over-year), the UK (+5.6%) and Spain (+13.1%).
Year to date, brand sales totaled 27,000 vehicles (-10.7% versus the same period in 2013) with share at 0.5% (-10 bps).
The MiTo registered its 9th consecutive monthly increase in Italy (+40% year-over-year), continuing its leadership in the 3-door small compact segment. In Germany, sales of the Giulietta increased 35.7% over May one year ago.
Jeep posted an all-time global sales record for the month passing the 100,000 vehicle mark. In Europe, May sales were up 100% year-over-year to 3,200 vehicles.
By major market, sales were up 70.5% in Italy, 79% in Germany, 134.7% in France, 230.6% in the UK and 17% in Spain.
For the year to date, Jeep brand sales were up 39.5% to more than 13,200 vehicles.
The Grand Cherokee continued as one of the best selling vehicles in its segment with sales up 167% for the month and 73.6% for the year to date.
For Ferrari and Maserati, the Group’s luxury brands, European sales totaled 771 vehicles in May and 3,749 vehicles for the year to date.
