CGTrader recently challenged its more than 100,000 3D designers to create “The Vehicle of the Future”. The Future Vehicles Challenge was aimed at individuals who can’t help but wonder what the future supercars will look like, how we’ll travel from point A to point B, and what new and captivating features these vehicles will possess. The Future Vehicles Challenge asked individuals to design a computer-generated 3D model of a fantasy concept vehicle.
“For years, individuals and companies alike have been creating and developing new technologies and concepts for the car of the future – it’s an area that gets a lot of interest, from the young child to the car enthusiast,” said Marius Kalytis, Chief Executive of CGTrader. Based in Vilnius, Lithuania, CGTrader is a fast growing community and marketplace for 3D graphics and printing designs, and is backed by Practica Capital and Intel Capital. “The Future Vehicles Challenge was created to encourage individuals to share their creative and forward thinking designs,” said Kalytis, “while bringing together other like-minded individuals to further enhance what the 3D design community has to offer.”
There are so many mechanical innovations and crazy inventions that technologically it is already entirely possible to have a part car, part drone, part plane parked in your garage. It may sound like an exaggeration, but only because it’s a completely new concept to us. We don’t realise that when we’re in an aeroplane, we’re basically flying in a drone, since drones are based on the same technology.
Designing a future vehicle is a liberating experience, since there are no rules and no expectations. The designers were asked to not limit themselves to the conventional means of transport, and to explore all possible methods of travelling – from electric rickshaws, to two-wheeled part-drone, part-car monsters, or even flying trams. Any computer-generated 3D model of a fantasy concept vehicle was welcomed to unravel the future of travel.
There were some amazingly innovative designs among hundreds of entries. Below is a list of the winning designs agreed upon by CGTrader’s judging committee. There were some heated arguments about what to include, so we encourage readers to go to the Future Vehicles Challenge page to see the complete catalogue of submissions. All can be downloaded, and many can be printed with a 3D printer.
