US sales still strong as segment shift continues in September

Chrysler, GM and Nissan capitalise on growing interest in CUVs, SUVs and pick-ups.

Light vehicle sales in the US remained on an upward trajectory in September, powered primarily by SUVs, CUVs and pick-ups. The industry ended the month with a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 16.34 million units, with vehicle sales up by 9.4% at around 1.246 million units. Last month's results marked the strongest September in a decade and about one million units ahead of last year's pace. While it came in notably below the 17.53 million SAAR recorded in the previous month of August, the results were generally in line with expectations.
