High performance demand causes shift in Mercedes-AMG engine production

The OEM says it is at maximum production capacity at its Affalterbach facility due to strong demand for its high performance models

Production of Mercedes-AMG’s 12-cylinder engine, found in the S65, S65 Coupe, G65 and SL65, was originally housed at the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, alongside the eight-cylinder engine. But growing demand for its high performance cars has forced the OEM to adjust plans.

The 12-cylinder engine will now be built at Daimler’s site in Mannheim in southwest Germany, where a separate assembly line will be set up. Space and employees that were previously used to build these at Affalterbach will be made available for the expansion of the eight-cylinder engine production line.
