US and Japan fail to reach trade agreement at G-7 summit

With no trade deal in place, Japanese automakers must continue to reckon with the reality of the US’ steep auto tariffs. By Stewart Burnett

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba failed to secure relief from the US’ punishing tariffs during talks with President Donald Trump at the G-7 summit, leaving major automakers facing a collective US$19bn impact. The meeting in Canada, which lasted some 30 minutes, produced no breakthrough on Trump's 25% levy on Japanese vehicles.
