A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences posits that autonomous vehicles (AVs) could be made safer by incorporating “social sensitivity” into their decision-making. This approach trains AVs to assess the collective impact of hazards and prioritise the protection of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
