The finals of the first Chery Global Manufacturing Technique Skills Competition with the theme of “Technological Chery and International Quality” kicked off on May 18 in Wuhu, the headquarters of Chery Automobile. Those present at the opening ceremony included leaders of Chery, leaders of the Federation of Trade Unions and the Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security of Wuhu, as well as 134 finalists. The finals got started with the leaders pressing the plasma ball. 

This competition was the largest one ever held in Chery’s history and also the first international automobile manufacturing technique competition organized by a Chinese automaker. Since its initiation in March this year, it has been going on in full swing. After more than 60 days of fierce competition and selection, 134 finalists have come out of a total number of 3,588 contestants from 14 plants worldwide. These finalists, who are all outstanding technicians with superb workmanship, are from various parts of the world. That with different colors and speak different languages. It is learned that the competition consists of five events, namely, assembly and adjustment of engines of passenger vehicles, stamping, welding, painting and passenger vehicle assembly and adjustment. The competition on each event undergoes four items, test on theoretical knowledge, technical Q&A, standardized operational skills and actual operation. The organizational setup for the competition includes an Organizing Committee, a Technical Committee and a Match Organizing Committee, to ensure the fairness and uniformity of the competition.  

This competition serves not only a platform for the showcasing of superb operational skills of Chery plants worldwide, but also a test of Chery’s implementation of manufacturing technique standardization and the CPS large-scale production in the past two years. The competition is not confined to the Wuhu Headquarters, but involves the two joint ventures under Chery which are Chery Qoros and Chery Jaguar Land Rover respectively as well as 14 plants in Iran, Brazil, Egypt and Venezuela. 

According to general manager assistant Mr. Jin Yibo of Chery Automobile, the competition is held mainly to achieve the following ends.

Firstly, with a vision of “Exquisite Workmanship Creates an Excellent Brand” Chery aims to possess superior manufacturing ability and attaches importance to manufacturing capacity building and development of superior techniques and skills which are expected to pass on in a rational way. Through the holding of the competition on a regular basis, Chery hopes to forge a workmanship spirit across the corporation so that the manufacturing can arrive at perfection.

Secondly, the competition is expected to promote the integrated mass production management and implement the CPS in Chery’s plants worldwide to unify the manufacturing standards.

Thirdly, it is expected to promote the autonomous learning and skill improvement of Chery workers worldwide, set up a platform for workers to show themselves, create an atmosphere of honouring technology and motivate workers to learn technology, compete on skills, ensure quality and vie to contribute. Through competing against each other, workers of different plants are expected to communicate with and learn from each other so as to improve the skills of all Chery workers.

Fourthly, foster and discover talents. Jin said that in the future this kind of competition would be included in the company’s annual plan and become a regular event, which would have profound meaning for Chery in upgrading the manufacturing in its worldwide plants. The competition is intended to discover and foster skilled workers, which is also expected to enhance the company’s management of human resources as well as the product quality. The gifted employees standing out of the competition will not only receive prizes and be included in Chery’s information base of high-skilled talents, but also get promotion according to relative regulations of the company.

Fifthly, the competition is also part and parcel in developing the corporate culture and creates a rare opportunity for the corporation. As part of the Chery Globalization Strategy 2.0, the activity can expedite the spread of Chery’s culture of workmanship to its overseas plants. 

With the launch of the finals, 134 elite technicians in auto manufacturing will compete against each other in high morale. They will continue to innovate, learn from each other and make improvements together. We have every reason to believe that they will give their best in the competition.
