Valmet will build a “showcase” for Industry 4.0

The contract manufacturer will bring 250 new robots into the GLC body shop to ensure it can follow demand. By Xavier Boucherat

Contract manufacturer Valmet Automotive is readying its facility in Uusikaupunki, Southwest Finland, to take on production of the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Daimler announced it would outsource an amount of production to help meet demand for the compact SUV, a premium entrant in a segment which continues to grow – IHS analysts predict that sales of compact SUVs in Europe will reach 1.9 million in 2016, and 2.2 million units by 2020. Valmet's new production job is expected to get underway in 2017.
