US fuel economy targets spur optimism in aluminium

Aluminium could rise in popularity across the US passenger vehicle market as OEMs turn to lightweighting initiatives, writes Michael Nash

The US automotive industry has been getting to grips with the lengthy draft Technical Assessment Report (TAR) recently released by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the California Air Resource Board (CARB). Early reactions were positive, with organisations voicing support for the measures highlighted in the document that will help improve the fuel economy of new vehicles between MY2022 and MY2025.

“We’re still reviewing the report, but I can already say that the fuel economy and greenhouse gas (GHG) targets for MY2025 reflect the change in fleet mix,” a spokesperson for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AoAM) told Automotive World. “The government is acknowledging the effect of factors like low gas prices on consumer sales and the impact of consumer sales on the targets.”
