Technology alone won’t cut truck-related fatalities

Technology has its limitations. When it comes to commercial vehicle safety, saving lives rests just as much on common sense and communication. By Jack Hunsley

Any vehicle crash can have tragic consequences. In a crash involving a commercial vehicle, however, the consequences can be far more severe than in light vehicles. Most commercial vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles, with the additional weight making it difficult for drivers to take avoiding action. This extra weight can also make the overall outcome, should a crash occur, far more serious. Reducing fatalities and injuries in this space, however, is not as simple as making truck technology safer.
