Plastic’s potential in transmissions is “the next frontier,” says DuPont

Transmissions and under-hood applications present new opportunities for lightweighting with plastics

The use of advanced plastics to achieve lightweighting goals has been prominent in many areas of vehicle development for decades. According to a study by MarketsandMarkets, the automotive market size in terms of value is projected to reach US$40.1bn by 2020, with a CAGR of 10.9%.

Focus in the powertrain typically falls upon engine components, but Randy White, DuPont Automotive Global Powertrain Segment Leader, thinks using plastics in transmissions could be “the next frontier.”
