OEM surprises abound but January no bellweather for US sales

Economic fundamentals remain promising, if somewhat uncertain, but the tailwind isn't playing out equally. By Megan Lampinen

Much of the momentum behind the US light vehicle market remains on pace, with the January seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of sales coming in at 17.48 million units, according to Autodata figures. The tally is down from the strong fourth quarter rate but in line with expectations. Notably, January is generally the slowest month of the year.
