New alloy could increase efficiency of ICEs and HEVs

Michael Nash talks to scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory about a new alloy that could have a big impact on powertrain development

A team of researchers from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which is owned by the US Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) Office of Science, have collaborated with partners at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and aluminium casting specialists Eck Industries to develop a new alloy that could have a considerable impact on engine efficiency. It is also easier to cast and more heat tolerant than existing products.
