As any autonomous vehicle (AV) developer will tell you, the two major phases of testing for a product with such massive safety considerations are verification and validation. The former ensures that a function works as intended, during which time it is pushed to its limits. During this time, developers will purposely try to break a system, in order to identify edges and maximise robustness. Validation follows, a statistic-based process in which integrity is measured and unexpected failures taking place outside of predictions are watched for.
