The development of engine oils is a complex chemical process that involves significant testing. Manufacturers have to consider the impact of oils on a number of factors, namely fuel economy, durability and drain interval.

With a variety of new low viscosity engine oils recently hitting the market, efficiency is currently considered to be top priority among lubricant suppliers, but the other parameters remain important.
