According to the Indian Institute of Technology, air pollution contributed to the deaths of more than 80,000 adults aged 30 and over in Mumbai and Delhi in 2015. The Delhi government reports that the overall average concentration of particulate matter (PM) in the summer season is five times higher than the ‘acceptable’ level, and in November 2016 in Delhi, PM2.5 pollutants – which are smaller and can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes – rose 16 times above the ‘safe’ limit.
