The Geneva International Motor Show 2016

Automotive World's overview of key new model launches at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show

The European passenger car market started 2016 on a positive note, with January marking the 29th consecutive month of sales growth. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), new car registrations in the EU rose by 6.2% at the start of this year, compared with January 2015, reaching 1,061,150 units.

This is, of course, a welcome sign for the automotive industry in the region, as the market trend, at least in the near future, appears to be stable. Among the trends that look to expand significantly in the coming years is that of automated and connected driving. The global market for automated vehicles is expected to reach 44 million by 2030. Working towards this end, the European automotive and telecom sectors launched an ‘EU Industry Dialogue on automated and connected driving’ in September last year. This agreement was updated with further co-operation between ACEA and the telecoms industry.

The Geneva show is the home of the European Car of the Year award. The 2016 COTY award went to the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, which took the title from a field of seven finalists. The Astra received a total of 309 points, with the second and third placed vehicles, the Volvo XC90 and the Mazda MX-5 receiving 294 and 202 points respectively from the 58-strong panel of judges.
