Fuel efficiency and older drivers good news for petrochemical market

Automotive manufacturers will adopt more plastics in vehicle designs, but are unlikely to benefit from lower oil prices, learns Xavier Boucherat

The automotive industry is one of the petrochemical market’s biggest end-users. On average, petrochemical plastics make up 13% of the weight of a car and over 50% of the volume. As fuel efficiency targets force the automotive industry through an increasingly radical transformation, demand for lightweight plastics will pick up, creating opportunities for petrochemical producers supplying automotive manufacturers.
