Is the end near for the ICE? ‘Not yet’, says Mercedes-Benz

According to Mercedes-Benz’s Bernhard Heil, developments in traditional engines can still deliver another 10-15% improvement in fuel efficiency

Despite the focus on EVs and electrified drivetrains, Mercedes-Benz is confident that many more development opportunities exist in conventional gasoline and diesel powertrains. “It is better to remain conservative, but I do foresee that traditional engines, and by that I mean the entire powertrain including the transmission, should bring us another 10-15% improvement in fuel efficiency,” Bernhard Heil, Mercedes-Benz Cars’ Vice President, Programme Management & Development for Passenger Car Engines and Powertrains, told Automotive World recently.
