Which is better: aluminium or advanced high-strength steel?

Michael Murphy reviews several publications by the aluminium and steel industries highlighting recent life-cycle analysis studies

The use of aluminium in light vehicles has featured regularly in the news lately with Alcoa, for example, forecasting that it will almost double by 2025. From 2000 to 2012, the aluminium content in the average US vehicle increased from around 265lb (120kg) to 342lb (155kg) and it is projected to increase to around 550lb (249kg) by 2025.
