BASF focuses on weight reduction – from the outside

Materials used in the production of the smart fortwo's lightweight roof could be use to make other exterior parts

BASF has revealed its development of a polyurethane foam system that allows for the mass-production of exterior car parts made with honeycomb sandwich structures, saving weight and improving fuel-efficiency. Elastoflex E has been used in the production of lightweight roofs for smart’s fortwo model since November 2014. The resulting roof is 30% lighter than that installed on the previous model, with no effect on strength and rigidity.
