Advanced safety systems pose potential hazards for new users

Active safety systems are becoming more mainstream, but may come with potential dangers to drivers who are unfamiliar with how they work

With nearly three-quarters of 2014 vehicles offering blind-spot detection and half offering lane-departure warning as options, it is clear that driver assistance technologies are cascading across vehicle lines and becoming more mainstream. But with these active safety systems may come potential dangers to drivers who are unfamiliar with how the systems work.

North American-based foundation for traffic safety AAA recently investigated these active safety technologies in a study conducted with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Centre, noting its confidence that new advanced driver assistance technologies like blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning systems have great potential to keep drivers safer, as long as motorists are aware of system limitations.
