A comprehensive approach to AV testing is necessary, say automakers

Automakers are experimenting with ride-hailing trials, on-road testing and closed-course facility development in the race to develop AV models, writes Betti Hunter

Once seen as a niche or a fantasist’s dream, a study by Allied Market Research now suggests that the autonomous vehicle (AV) market will grow from US$54bn in 2019 to US$556.67bn in 2026. According to 2018 research by Sven Beiker of consulting firm Silicon Valley Mobility, over 70 different companies are piloting self-driving vehicles around the world. The majority of AVs are being developed in the US and Europe, but Chinese, Australian and Canadian companies are also trialling models.
