48v mild hybrids to become ‘industry standard’

Michael Nash speaks to developers of 48-volt systems about market expectations for the technology

Stop-start technology in passenger vehicles has become common in many regions of the world and is currently being used as a standard fitment by numerous OEMs. The growing adoption of the technology has primarily been driven by the need to meet emissions standards, as some systems claim to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions by up to 15%.

Vehicles have traditionally been dependent on 12-volt (12v) systems to handle electronic devices in the car. However, with the rising popularity of stop-start, regenerative braking and various other vehicle electronics, 48v systems could take the lion’s share of the market as they boast a higher power limit.
