The trucking industry has long been ruled by diesel, but there are alternatives on offer. A number of automakers and fleets have been dabbling in biodiesel, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas and propane. These all have their pros and cons, but so far none have been able to achieve zero-emissions. More recently, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology has come under the spotlight. "There are only two ways to achieve zero emission on vehicles that we know of today: using full batteries to store electricity or generating the electricity in a fuel cell," pointed out Patrick Dean, Kenworth's Chief Engineer.
