The influence of Bauhaus, a German school of art operative in the interwar period, is hard to understate. Its combination of functionality with attractive design has inspired countless industries, including automotive. German brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have, to varying degrees, embraced a ‘form-follows-function’ approach: speaking in 2017, Daimler’s Head of Design Gorden Wagener described the movement as “a revolutionary trailblazer,” and that “its simplicity of form and reduction to the essential is also reflected in Mercedes-Benz design.”
