Could Germany become Europe’s hydrogen society?

Daimler’s GLC F-Cell is now available to lease in Germany. With 400 hydrogen fuelling stations planned for 2025, could the country become Europe’s home for FCEVs? By Xavier Boucherat

In September 2018, Germany unveiled a world-first: a hydrogen-powered train, running along a 100km (62-mile) route through Lower Saxony, in the northwest of the country. Using a fuel-cell powertrain for propulsion, it can travel roughly 600 miles (1,000km) on one tank. French manufacturer Alstom has plans to bring a further 14 vehicles into operation by 2021, in a move away from regular diesel operations.
