The revolutionary Dearman transport refrigeration system, the first in the world to be powered by a liquid nitrogen engine, has been shortlisted for a respected industry award.
The Dearman Engine powered transport refrigeration system has been nominated in the ‘Innovation’ category at the TCS&D awards. It has been recognised for the innovative nature of the technology, the positive effect it can have on the environment and its potential to have a major impact upon the industry.
The Dearman engine, which is powered by the rapid expansion of liquid nitrogen, delivers clean, highly efficient and cost-effective power and cooling. The system is currently on the road in a world first operational trial with Sainsbury’s, where it is delivering chilled and frozen food across London.
Typically, transport refrigeration units are powered by diesel. These small auxiliary engines are under-regulated and disproportionately polluting, emitting up to 29 times as much pollution as a modern truck engine.
The innovative Dearman powered transport refrigeration system is zero-emission, eliminating NOx and particulate matter from the cooling process entirely. It’s also powerful, offering rapid cool down and precise temperature control, enabling it to provide operational performance as well as environmental benefits.

The development and deployment of this ground-breaking technology has been made possible by Dearman’s partners: Hubbard Products; Dawsonrentals; Air Products and Solomon Commercial. Hubbard has provided world leading expertise and operational support, contributing their own refrigeration technology and systems integration. Dawsonrentals has provided use of a state-of-the-art refrigerated vehicle and has supported project coordination. Air Products has contributed expertise in cryogenics while supplying the liquid nitrogen and refuelling infrastructure. Solomon Commercial built the refrigerated body and helped to integrate the new technology into the truck.
