Toyota fires up engine plant in Indonesia

The facility will manufacture the new NR engines, and features innovations that shift the focus from high-volume production to efficiency and flexibility. By Xavier Boucherat

Production has started at Toyota’s engine plant in Karawang, Indonesia. Construction of the Rupiah 2.3tr (US$176m) plant was completed earlier in 2016. The plant has an annual capacity of 216,000 units per annum (upa). A spokesperson told Automotive World that at least half the plant’s output would be for export. In Indonesia, Toyota builds the Innova, Avanza, Fortuner and other models at its two Karawang plants. In 2014, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia built 209,085 vehicles.
