Cylinder deactivation (CDA) technology, an enabler of variable displacement, was adopted by numerous OEMs back in 2005 with the hope of improving fuel economy in large engines. Since then, several companies have examined its potential in smaller engines with as few as three cylinders.
Ford, for example, recently teamed up with Schaeffler to investigate the potential of CDA in its award-winning 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engines. The companies carried out on-road tests and recorded a 6% increase in fuel efficiency.
