NHTSA asking questions weeks ahead of Tesla robotaxi launch

The NHTSA is particularly interested in how Tesla's robotaxis, which have no audio receivers, will detect oncoming emergency vehicles. By Stewart Burnett

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent Tesla a detailed inquiry regarding the safety and functionality of its robotaxi service, set to launch in Austin by June. Key concerns include how Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software handles adverse weather conditions and whether the robotaxis will actually meet SAE Level 3 autonomy standards on the SAE scale.
